You met a man You did him wrong You made him sing all those cover songs Just so you could hum along hum along hum along How about something new for a change You built a war you bought a door You locked your door with your key to the North The stilts you wear they just slow you down You wear your heart on your sleeve like some broken crown Like something you found down in a ditch If you get rich please forget us Buy all your happiness Hold nothing sacred in the world But you and your true love's bliss You take a stand on stolen land You carry only what you hold in one hand yeah you built your house on sinking sand just so you could disappear Maybe this year love will come set you free or maybe you'll just lay in your grave God, we're all so brave til we're dying in some ditch If you get rich please forget us Buy all your happiness Hold nothing sacred in the world But you and your true love's bliss

about

”Kerowax” is the debut album by this pop-influenced Americana band fronted by singer-songwriter Johnny Beauford. The group is composed of musicians from several Dallas/Fort Worth bands. The 10-track album was recorded, mixed, and mastered solely on analog equipment at Ferralog Studios in Dallas, TX.

Jack Kerowax arose out of friendships, collaborations and rehearsals in northeastern Texas. Looking for sidemen to perform on what he intended to be a full-length solo album, Johnny Beauford began playing with local musicians Garrett Padgett (Deadmoon Choir & Bravo, Max!), Nathan Adamson (The Hazardous Dukes) and Chase McMillan (Goodnight Ned). A weekly residency at a Dallas-area cafe gave the guys time to develop out a warm, fuzzed-out blend of Americana arrangements and pop hooks.

“Dallas-Fort Worth bandleader Johnny Beauford wanted to make a solo album, so began casting the net for compadres who would fit. The newly-minted assemblage started playing a weekly gig in Dallas, and the next thing anyone realized was that the Jack Kerowax was a band. Thank goodness for that, too, because the fresh aggregation has an appealingly strange way of roping together influences ranging from Lou Reed to real country, without ever sounding as preposterous as it looks in print”

– BILL BENTLEY, THE MORTON REPORT

During tracking and after completing sessions the band played 50+ shows over an 18 month period, opening for national acts Jessica Lea Mayfield, Bobby Bare Jr., Bobby Patterson, Night Moves, My Jerusalem, The Bunny Gang, Eric McFadden and more. The band took an extended break from live performances in preparation for the albums’ release. Bassist Chase McMillan was later replaced by assistant engineer for the album, Nash Griggs.

“Jack Kerowax serve up killer Americana on stellar debut album”

– JEFFREY SISK, PITTSBURGH IN TUNE

“Country-pop with complex arrangements and devilishly delicious 100% analog sound”

– MAX ACHATZ, COUNTRY JUKEBOX (MUNICH, GERMANY)

“Lyrically, this record is full of condensed short stories. Most of the stuff I write has some pretty dark undertones, and the music in response, usually seems to have some equally dark overtones. However, there are good times — and despite popular opinion, it is possible to be inspired by joy as easily as depression or anger”, says Beauford, a prolific songwriter and occasional solo artist who also fronts the rock group Bravo, Max!

The album’s lead single, “Ten Year War”, mixes thick harmonies, guitar arpeggios and gauzy keyboards into a cautionary love song. “It touches on falling in love with a country or religion or person or obsession that may very well turn its back on you”, says Beauford, who sings the tune in a warm, wounded baritone. Meanwhile, songs like “Huck Finn’s Hideout” and ‘”Fever” crank up the tempo as well as the guitar amps, resulting in a sound that mixes the swagger of blues with the boozy spirit of rock’n’roll. “Moonshine Barber” even finds enough room for harmonica and saloon-style piano, too, drawing a connection between the Dallas music scene of today and the more western-leaning sounds of the previous century.

“Indie-pop, Americana, and ingenious Texas blues”
